Arm pain can be monitored; progressing nerve signs should not wait.

Cervical radiculopathy often causes radiating arm pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that may follow C5-C8 nerve-root patterns. Many stable cases begin with nonoperative care.

Spinal-cord signs are different. Hand clumsiness, gait imbalance, bilateral symptoms, bowel/bladder change, or progressive weakness should not be treated as ordinary posture pain.

Clues that fit nerve-root irritation

  • Pain, tingling, or numbness travels from neck or shoulder blade into the arm and fingers.
  • Neck extension, turning toward the symptomatic side, coughing, or sneezing aggravates arm symptoms.
  • A specific strength change appears, such as biceps, wrist extension, triceps, or grip weakness.
  • Placing the hand on top of the head sometimes reduces symptoms in some nerve-root patterns.

Clues that raise spinal-cord concern

  • Buttoning, handwriting, chopsticks, keys, or other fine hand tasks become clumsy.
  • Walking feels unsteady, balance worsens, or tripping increases.
  • Symptoms affect both hands or feet, or do not fit one single nerve distribution.
  • Bowel/bladder changes, saddle numbness, or progressive weakness appear.

When further testing may be needed

Persistent or worsening symptoms, weakness, or function loss should not be managed only with online exercises. A clinician may consider MRI, electrodiagnostic testing, or referral based on the exam.

Conservative care should reduce symptoms, improve sleep and function, and build tolerance. It should not require proving that you can endure nerve pain.
